Tina Turner is one of the rock music’s great performers. An extremely attractive woman with a powerful voice, her concerts tend to send fans wild. This is not to suggest, however, that she is a mere sex symbol. Her tough independence has also brought much praise from the women’s movement. At the moment, Tina Turner is at the height of her success. Her last album, Private Dancer, was voted Record of the Year in 1984 and she has continued to act in films, receiving praise for her performance in Mad Max III. It must be remembered that life hasn’t always been so rosy for Tina Turner. Born Annie-May Bullock in 1938 she grew up in Nutbush, Tennessee. Her musical career began in 1960 and for many years she worked under the influence of her husband and professional partner, Ike Turner. In the 1960s Ike and Tina were household names. They recorded a number of soul hits and accompanied the Rolling Stones on their 1966 British tour. They also played alongside them at the fateful Altamont Music Festival in 1969. The Turner marriage began to go downhill in the 1970s and the two finally split in 1976 in the middle of a concert tour. Since then Tina Tuner has struck out on her own and has forged a fine solo career. When I went to see her I began by asking when she decided to become a singer. The full audio interview follows... |
